What's the attraction?
It's got a conservation breeding programme, both flora and fauna, in which the boys are interested. It's educational and fun at the same time.
What's on offer?
A wide range of animals in a naturally picturesque setting.
How did you get there?
Drove along the A55 then took the Colwyn Bay turn off. It's very well signposted from there. The zoo also operates a free minibus from the train station in Colwyn Bay at Easter and from May to mid-September.
Click to launch Google MapHow long did you stay?
Because the boys were having such a good time we stayed for longer than we planned - about four hours.
Did you take a brolly?
No, there was no need as it was a lovely spring day but if in doubt take one as there aren't many sheltered areas.
What did you do there?
The sea lion feeding and training session was starting as we arrived so we watched that and the children loved it. Then we visited the reptile house as the boys wanted to see the alligator. Daily activities are posted at the shop - The Trading Post; check to see what's going on.
How much did it cost?
A family ticket cost for 2 adults and 2 children costs £24.95, adults £7.95, children £5.50. Children under 3 are free as are people in wheelchairs. There are also concessions for seniors and students.
How about food and drinkThey serve hot and cold meals and snacks in the restaurant. There are picnic areas so a flask and a pack-up would be a good idea as a cheap alternative
Are there any shops?
There is a gift shop that sells ice-cream, souvenirs and zoo animals of the stuffed, plastic and pottery variety.
It is ok/safe for kids?
Yes, they loved the freedom to go and explore on their own, which I felt happy and willing for them to do. There is also an excellent play area with a swinging tyre which I had to try out - just in case it was unsuitable of course!
Can people with disabilities get around?
The zoo owners have done their best to provide wheelchair access but because of its location some areas may still prove difficult.
Toilets?
Plenty of clean toilets with wheelchair access and baby changing facilities.
What was the best bit?
It was an ideal day out for my boys because they are both big wildlife fans. Ollie loved the spider monkeys and Peter thought the parrots were great, especially Chico. They also loved the farm animals and thoroughly enjoyed playing the wild life quiz on the computer in the conservation centre.
Opening times
Every day apart from Christmas Day from 9.30am-5pm.
