Picture of North Wales Golf Driving Range, St Asaph

What's the attraction?

The chance to be the next Tiger Woods or Ian Woosnam, by practising your golfing skills at a covered floodlit golf range, plus nine-hole course, at Trefnant, between St Asaph and Denbigh.

What's on offer?

The individual bays mean you can hone your skills and check your stance - or even just try out golf for the first time, so it's great for novices and families. Clubs are available, free, plus you can book tuition from PGA professionals.

How did you get there?

It's on the A525 between St Asaph and Denbigh. At Trefnant follow the tourist board signs near to the Tweedmill shopping complex.

How long did you stay?

I am tempted to say "FOREEEEEEE HOURS" but we were actually there for just over two and a half hours.

Did you take a brolly?

No, it was a beautiful crisp winter's day however most driving ranges have covered bays or stalls, where avid golfers head when the weather puts a damper on their regular game.

What did you do there?

You can buy a bucket of balls from a machine, and ask the staff for advice on which club is suitable for you - useful if you're a complete beginner.

The range is actually an open field with distance markers and target greens.

At our designated bay we attempted to hit, chip and mostly miss the golf ball off the green astro turf to the greens.

Steve the manager showed us the new automated tee machine, which conveniently sets up to 100 golf balls for you.

We also went for a round of golf around the nine hole course to test our new skills.

How much did it cost you?

A basket of 20 golf balls cost £1 -you can buy as many as you want. A round on the nine-hole course is £5 each (clubs and carry case included).

How about food and drink?

On Steve's suggestion for lunch we headed over to the Drapers Cafe Bar at the Tweedmill, overlooking the course.

It's won Les Routiers awards for its hospitality and cuisine, with its chefs cooking to order using local produce. James and Rachel had home made soup and bread while we ate a delicious beef dinner.

Are there any shops?

The course has a golf shop with lots of equipment. And the Tweedmill offers plenty of retail therapy and the chance hunt down your first pair of golfing trousers or Pringle jumper.

Is it ok for kids?

It's a great place to introduce youngsters to the sport.

Unlike miniature golf, the driving range allows kids to engage in full swing without tiring out from a full or half course round.

Driving golf balls is more quickly paced than a 9-hole game of golf and will hold younger players' attention longer. And they can get instruction without holding up a round of golf.

The range also offers children's lessons - call to check times and prices

Can people with disabilities get around?

Steve says the course is fairly flat and so accessible - there's also a buggy.

What were the best bits?

We're novices so for us the aim was not to appear complete buffoons, and soon learnt to pretend misses were actually practice swings.

James and Rachel seemed to have more luck despite one shot which somehow was hit backwards, after a wild ricochet, attracting a few nervous glances from neighbouring golfers. James' highlight was chipping the ball into the 80 metre net.

It is good fun, even watching seasoned golfers hit the ball so sweetly with a wood and a whoosh that predicts it's been hit true and straight, making you feel amateur in comparison.

We had a little more luck around the course, but the notorious fourth resulted in some of the family searching the hedge for golf balls.
