Picture of Oriel Ynys Môn

The Alun family visit Oriel Ynys Môn

What's the attraction?
Galleries, museum, gift shop and café.

What's on offer?
The new Kyffin Williams gallery, another gallery with various artists on display we saw Mike Lees' work and a History gallery where you can find out about Anglesey's past. They also host events and have a large craft market before Christmas.

How did you get there?
Followed the A55 to Llangefni and then followed the brown signs , very easy to find.

How long did you stay?
About 2 hours, not a place to spend a day but a good way to pass a rainy afternoon.

Did you take a brolly?
No need, everything is under cover.

What did you do there?
When we arrived we went to see Mike Lees' work, there is a lack of signage within the building so this was pure chance as we just followed our noses. This work was designs made of glass, the next work on display will be paintings by Emrys Williams (16 August-21 September). We had a whistle-stop tour around trying to keep the terrible two under control.
We then went on to the History Gallery which was really good, it depicts different periods in Anglesey's history and has a fantastic dressing up box which our three had a go at story sacks and games. You can have a go at making coin rubbings or making a rag mat. A bit of a missed opportunity was that there were staff standing around but not interacting with the children by running story or craft sessions. Llio was fascinated by the Tunnicliffe exhibition and the detail that is in his work. We then went to the Kyffin Williams gallery, this had some fantastic pieces of his work and will be changing regularly.

How much did it cost you?
The best bit ..It's all for free but they welcome donations.

How about food and drink?
There is a fantastic café ‘Blas Mwy', which was very busy on the day we visited. They are experts in home made cakes, the chocolate cake and scones are very highly recommended. They have a good range of snacks and meals available.

Are there any shops?
There is a large gift shop called Jac Do, which stocks all kinds of crafts, prints and work by local artists and craftspeople. The range is extensive with objects to appeal to everyone. You can buy greeting cards with Kyffin artwork on them since most of us won't be able to afford the real thing.

Is it ok/safe for kids?
The staff were really welcoming, the gallery museum part was very suitable as they could touch and try out different things. The galleries are large and made our two younger ones want to run around, it was a challenge to keep them interested in these rooms but the staff did not seem to mind a bit of noise. There are adequate baby changing areas. It's a pity that they have not put in a play area in the grounds around the building.

Can people with disabilities get around?
No problems, everywhere had ramps and wide doors.

What was the best bit?
Morgan thought that dressing up as Roman Soldier was fantastic, and all of us enjoyed the cakes at Blas Mwy.

Opening times?
Every day 10.30am - 5pm. Phone 01248 724 444 or visit www.ynysmon.gov.uk
