Mary Stuart, Clwyd Theatre Cymru,

IT’s not often you get to act in a play directed by your dad, but that’s what’s happening to actress Marina Hands, who takes the title role in Mold’s Clwyd Theatr Cymru play Mary Stuart next month.

Marina, whose father Terry is celebrating 12 years as the venue’s artistic director, reveals she’s not getting any special favours from her dad, known for his focused approach.

She says: "He is not extra nice to me. I would not like that anyway. I am too proud. He is very equal with everyone."

The play tells the story of the personal struggle between two determined women Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor as they strive to prove themselves as the rightful Queen of England.

The famous Frenchwoman and the Englishwoman were cousins.

Marina plays Mary, who was also briefly Queen of France.

She said: "The play is split in two. There is the history of Mary during the play and what happens to Elizabeth. They meet in the middle of the play and in the last act you have what happens to both of them.

"They are two women struggling with power issues and the legitimacy of their claims to the throne."

Marina was born in France to a Russian mother – Terry’s former wife Ludmila Mikael.

Marina says: "I was born in France. I did know about Mary because she also grew up in France and her mother was French. I’m practising a lot because English is my second language."

Marina’s parents split up when she was young. But she often visited her dad and met famous actors, which encouraged her to act.

In a beautiful French accent, Marina, who lives in Paris, says: "My dad has always been a theatre figure to me. I have been impressed by actors I’ve met though him.

"I met Ralph Fiennes at the Royal Shakespeare Company. I was probably 10 and he wasn’t a star then. At Clwyd Theatre Cymru, I’ve met great actors like Claire Price and Owen Teale. It’s very exciting."

Marina went on to train at The National conservatoire in Paris and at LAMDA in London.

Her talent and hard work have paid off, and she appeared in the critically acclaimed film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, as Josephine.

German dramatist Friedrich Schiller wrote the play Mary Stuart in 1800 and this is a new version by Mike Poulton, directed by Terry.

There is a strong cast including Claire Price (Elizabeth I), who is well known to TV’s Rebus fans as DS Siobhan Clarke, Owen Teale (Lord Burghley), of BBC TV’s Torchwood fame, and Steffan Rhodri (Earl of Leicester) who played Joe Gargery in Great Expectations at Mold, and is Dave Coaches in TV’s Gavin and Stacey.
