Osprey eggs hatch
AN osprey chick has just hatched at Glaslyn, the key breeding site for the rare birds in North Wales.
The chick is the first to be born at the reserve this year and started to chip its way out of the shell 6.45am yesterday and today's visitors will be amongst the first to see the new arrival.
Emyr Evans, Osprey Project officer for RSPCA Cymru, watched the bird hatch live on the nest cam.
He said: "The new arrival is completely bald, still wet and absolutely tiny, as you would expect from a chick that is just a few hours old. Its eyes will open properly and it will have a first feed, which would be great to watch."
The remaining two eggs are being incubated by the adult birds and are expected to hatch at the weekend and next week.
This year is the fifth breeding season for the Glaslyn Ospreys at the Pont Croesor reserve near Porthmadog. The parents of the chick are the only known pair of breeding ospreys in Wales and it is hoped when the chicks are ready to breed they will return to the area.
The reserve is open daily between 10am and 6pm until the end of August details can be found at www.rspb.co.uk/brilliant.
