The Elixir of Love, Venue Cymru, Llandudno
CAMILLA Roberts will have her own family fan club in the audience at Venue Cymru when she takes centre stage as Adina in the Welsh National Opera's The Elixir of Love next week.
This is the biggest role for the soprano, who represented Wales in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 2005.
"Mum and dad came on the first night in Cardiff but every music teacher I have had from my childhood will be there and my grandma and even my auntie from Buxton is coming," said Camilla, who grew up in Wrexham.
Her parents are not from an operatic background and Camilla says they have grown to enjoy opera as their daughter's career has developed.
That's just as well, as Camilla‘s partner David Soar is also a rising star of the opera world and is appearing in WNO's new production of The Marriage of Figaro, which is also coming to Llandudno.
The couple have been going out for five years and David was in the audience for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World that year to support Camilla. This year's competition is at St David's Hall, Cardiff, June 6-14.
"Adina is a great character. She‘s straightforward in many ways but scratch the surface and she is insecure. It's too easy to make her appear a bitch but I hope in this production people genuinely like her."
So with David also on the road, is it all shop talk?
"We do talk about work because he understands, and likewise. He might tell me about something he might be having trouble with and we can share ideas. But it isn't always work!"
