This summer crowds of people from across the county, some of the biggest names in music and wakeboard lovers travel to Cardigan Bay to experienceEurope’s largest music wakeboarding festival, writes DANIELE BRERETON
Ellie Goulding and Chase and Status headline the first night of the festival on Friday, with The Wombats on Saturday and Biffy Clyro on Sunday. Other acts on offer include Example, Kelis, Zane Lowe, far East Movement, The Noisettes and Kids in Glass Houses, with the line-up being completed next week.
Welsh acts that have been added to the line-up include man of the moment on BBC Radio 1 and Wakestock favourite Huw Stephens who took over from Jo Wiley, Masters in France, Sibrydion, Colorama, Mr Phormula, Poket Trez and Bare Left.
However, it is not just the musical scene that people travel to Cardigan Bay for. Wakeboarding, a high speed action sport is brought to the area for competitions and just for fun. Mostly practised behind a speed boat with the rider towed behind at about 25 mph. The boat’s wake (stream of water the boat creates behind it) is used to launch the rider into the air, where they pull technical inverts and spins of up to 1260 degrees.
Four days of wakeboarding contests take place at three different venues under two miles away from the main festival site, where some of the world’s best riders will be competing here including World champion Nick Davies. The main contests are at Pwllhelli Marina, which can be accessed by a shuttle bus costing £5 for the entire weekend to make it easy to get around the area.
Some of the world’s best riders will be competing here including World champion Nick Davies from the UK. Others include past winners Dan Nott and Jonty Green and more names like Sam Carne, Ben Hitch, James Young and up and coming riders Freddy Carter and Jorge Gill.
If you like breathtaking walks and wildlife then the bay is unique for it’s marine life, where you can observe bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals from the Ceredigion Coast Path nearby. The Llyn Peninsula is renowned for it’s fantastic surfing beaches, villages, scenery and much more so you never have to worry about having nothing to do.
