Who was Kate Roberts? Born in 1891 and raised on a traditional smallholding in Rhosgadfan, this quarryman’s daughter became one of Wales’ most renowned authors, journalist and nationalist, and is regarded as “the Queen of Welsh Literature.”
Your tour begins in the Caban, a new building built in 2007 on the site of the old hay barn situated behind the house. A short film awaits you, discussing milestones in Kate Roberts’ career and personal life. You will also have the opportunity to browse through and purchase her published works in our shop.
A multimedia exhibition demonstrating what inspired Kate Roberts to write has replaced what was once the cowshed. What kind of place was Rhosgadfan at the turn of the twentieth century? What was life like on a smallholding? What influence did the quarries have on the community? Discover this and more in Brethyn the cow’s old home.
Take a step back in history to Kate Roberts’ childhood years and enjoy the cosy yet humble surroundings of the traditional cottage. Come and listen to voices form the past as you go from room to room. Audio guides are available with excerpts for Kate Roberts’ work to guide you around the house.
You’re more than welcome to enjoy the traditional garden and striking views towards the estuary and beyond. How about bringing picnic?
