Llechwedd Slate Caverns is not a typical museum. Set in 2000 acres of land above the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog we're a living, working slate mine that has been active since opening in 1836.
We offer 2 very individual and unique underground experiences to discover the world of the Victorian slate miner.
Visit the Deep Mine Tour and be guided by 'Sion Dolgarregddu', as he guides you through 10 magnificent 'sound and light' sequences. Be sure to soak up the atmosphere of the spectacular underground lake as you make your way back to the surface.
Take a ride on the Miners Tramway into a network of spectacular manmade catherdral high chambers. Our guides will take you to the oldest part of Llechwedd where you will learn about the life and times of the Victorian Slate Miner. Hear stories of the ‘Caban' and experience what it was like to see these vast caverns - by candlelight.
Our main shop is open all year selling slate and seasonal gifts. At the Slate Workshop (with daily demonstrations) housenames/numbers are produced to order - from the world famous Greaves Welsh Slate - quarried to this day, since 1836.
Visit the Victorian Village (April-September) and exchange new money for old at the Village Bank - visit Ffestin's traditional sweet shop or try some local ale at the Miners' Arms.
For the more energetic visit the view point, from where you can see the magnificent sights of the surrounding area.

The above prices include the £2 site entrance fee.
As you can see, there are great saving to be made by taking both tours. Also, the combined tour offers families a 10% discount on the full price! Children under 3 go free.

Open every day from 10.00am excl. Christmas, Boxing and New Years day. Last tour into the mines 5.15pm Easter - September and 4.15pm the rest of the year.
Directions: Situated on the A470 north of Blaenau Ffestiniog. 40 minutes from the A55 and 20 minutes from the A5 at Betws y Coed. 10 miles from Portmadoc. Easy access and free parking.
