Join us for a train ride with a difference. Climb on board one of our heritage carriages for a short trip through the Snowdonia countryside. On the return journey, the train stops at the engine sheds, where you can climb on one of our steam or diesel locomotives and see how things work for yourself. Ideal for families with young children...... and for kids up to the age of 90!
Hands-on Experience
The WHR(P) is one of the few steam railways where you get chance to visit the engine sheds as part of your ride and climb on board the engines, work the levers and see for yourself how things work. Find out what makes our steam locomotive “Karen” a tank engine. Meet “Beano” the horse and see how narrow gauge railways worked before steam locomotives came along...... You can also sit at the controls of our small blue shunting locomotive and discover why you drive it sideways, or climb into the cab of one of the largest narrow gauge engines in the UK.
Outside the sheds, have a go at working the buttons and switches inside our diesel shunter “Badco”. On certain selected days, you can also have a ride on our new miniature railway.
The Train Ride
Ride in our vintage coaches, some of which are over 100 years old. See where the Prime Minister sat when he visited the railway in 1892. The train starts at Porthmadog (WHR) station, and trundles through the meadows of Snowdonia to our new terminus, Traeth Mawr Loop. Watch as the engine runs to the other end of the train to pull us back the other way. The train also stops at Pen-y-Mount, where you can leave the train here and explore the network of footpaths through the surrounding countryside.
Opening Times
Trains run every day from 15th March – 2nd November, though we’re closed on some Mondays and Fridays in October

Special Events
We've also organised a number of special events during the year, including a visit by the Easter Bunny on Easter Sunday (23rd March), and the ever popular Teddy Bears Picnic (31st May & 1st June). Our main gala event of the year takes place from 3rd – 5th May 2007.
Join us for a Summer Steam Spectacular from 19th July – 31st August. Steam trains are running every day through the summer holidays. Our vintage steam locomotive “Gelert” may be joined by a surprise visitor.
There’s a double steam spectacular July 28th – August 29th when steam trains return to the Cambrian Coast main line between Machynlleth, Barmouth & Porthmadog. “The Cambrian” runs from Mondays to Fridays, and continues to Pwllheli on certain days.
Passengers on “The Cambrian” can also get a discount of 10% on a ride on the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog). Simply come to our shop and show your ticket from the main line train.
