Mountain biking in North Wales will take riders on an exciting, challenging and steep learning curve, whether they are beginners, intermediate, advanced or competitive cyclists.

There are trails suitable for beginners and family groups at Coed Llandegla Forest and energy sapping mountain biking marathons in the high peaks of the Clwydian Range, which offers a whole network of mountain biking routes and maps under the banner Ride The Clwyd. North Wales Mountain Bike Association is also a great source of information on cycling races and other events, competition information and trail biking demo days.

There’s a huge choice of recognised mountain bike routes in North Wales including Clocaenog Forest, Betws y Coed, Bala, Llangollen, Lake Vrynwy and Dyfnant Forest. The spectacular scenery has put the region in the top league for amateur bikers and professionals.

Race enthusiasts flock here for events like the Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series heat in Ruthin, Welsh Dragon Series XC, the Cyffylliog Challenge and the Clwydian Trailquest, a mountain bike orienteering event. In October Flintshire County Council and Birkenhead North End Cycle Club also run the Flintshire Challenge annual endurance race.

With a landscape equipped for everything from cross country to 4Cross and downhill biking, there are also numerous opportunities for mountain bike holidays in North Wales.

A wide range of cycle friendly accommodation, bike hire facilities, coaching sessions and mountain biking courses, specialist bike shops and cyclists’ cafes are available. A quick call to national park tourist information centres or websites will help bikers pinpoint North Wales hotels and bed and breakfasts with safe bike storage, a bike wash, clothes washing facilities and drying rooms.

Local public transport includes two bike rack buses, specially adapted to carry up to two bikes at a time, providing an opportunity for point to point rides along the Clwydian Range.

In Snowdonia the breath taking Gwydyr Forest and nearby Coed y Brenin are ideally situated for mountain bikers of all abilities.
In Denbighshire and Conway mountain bike trails in the Hiraethog are attracting ever more enthusiasts and that area also has a newly created dedicated website www.ridehiraethog.com detailing routes round the reservoirs of Llyn Brenig, the Alwen and Denbigh moors.

For youngsters North Wales Mountain Bike Association holds Go-Ride cycle sports skills sessions on Saturday mornings at Coed Llandegla Mountain Bike Centre for children aged nine to 13. Full details are on their website www.nwmba.org.uk

There is also a special mountain bike guide, Bikefax, for riders in north east Wales, with information on latest mountain biking events.
For parties whose interests vary, last year saw the opening of a new purpose built multi-user trail at Coed Nercwys comprising two miles of trail suitable for bikes, horse riders and walkers and ideally suited to family cyclists and their friends.
