A BIT of a change really from the usual Sunday at Pennant, especially having had a busy morning feeding the cows and managing to get to Sunday School on time.
Walking into the welcoming, friendly atmosphere of Kimberlee's Restaurant, housed in Y Plas in Machynlleth, promised the perfect afternoon.
Armed with an aperitif, we sat on the patio enjoying the winter sunshine as the children enjoyed the freedom of the park.
Close enough to keep a watchful eye especially on the mischievous little ones.
It was a perfect way to relax and take the opportunity of trying out the culinary skills of Annabel, the manager.
Well, she's actually Kim and Lee's daughter (Kimberlee's), who also own and run the popular Glyndwr and Forresters pubs and restaurant in town.
Having been open for only a few months, Annabel's facing the challenge of running the restaurant whilst juggling her time between family and work.
With traditional background music, the building evoked strong feelings of Celtic life reflecting a magical blend of myth and music.
Being in one of the oldest manor houses in town, it is quite clear that the Plas exerted a powerful influence.
The huge portraits of previous owners created the ideal ambience.
Wine and starters were not an option with the children so we focused on the main course, and we all chose the beef from the carvery with all the "trimmings".
The beef is sourced locally by the town's famous butcher - Wil Lloyd Williams - as is all the ingredients used by Annabel.
Offering home cooked food is clearly a priority in order to ensure her customers receive the highest standards possible - and cuts down on food miles. Annabel also provides outside catering in addition to running breakfast, lunch and Sunday menus.
A tall order but with determination, commitment and hard work she is realising her dream, following closely in the footsteps of her parents.
Our food arrived hot on our plates in less than 15 minutes.
A Sunday lunch to remember with an array of traditional, perfectly cooked vegetables - new potatoes, peas, beans, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, swede, roast potatoes and of course the Yorkshire puddings.
The beef was moist and succulent, with that melting in the mouth factor.
The service was indeed impressive and very professional - friendly and fast.
The dessert cabinet couldn't be ignored (especially by the children) with a combination of traditional and modern to satisfy our varying tastes.
Trendy versus the traditional - rice crispy cakes for the children and homemade apple and blackberry pie with custard for us. Delicious.
We were not disappointed as the afternoon unfolded - it was truly a relaxing with the children skipping backwards and forwards to the park as we savoured our time over coffees on the patio.
It was a memorable Sunday lunch at the Plas, though unfortunately these are not running again until April. They are open every weekday for lunch, though.
Excellent food (in abundance), for the whole family in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
The venue, overlooking the park was perfect, accommodating the children between courses and so cancelling out any boredom.
In a word, the perfect afternoon for the whole family.
