Bala is a market town that is now most famous for watersports.

It is situated in the bottom right-hand corner of the Snowdonia National Park and at the head of Llyn Tegid, one of  Wales' largest lakes.

There is a smattering of shops, including independents as well as two supermarkets, and plenty of choice of to where to stay.

The stunning scenery combined with oodles of small-Welsh-town culture make Bala well worth a visit, both for families and those seeking a little adventure.

Llyn Tegid, with its valley channelled winds, is ideal for sports such as windsurfing and sailing, while nearby Llyn Celyn is home to a number of white water canoeing competitions.

The lakes are also popular fishing destinations and Llyn Tegid contains Pike, Roach, Perch, Trout, Grayling and Eels.

There is also a unique fish called the Gwyniad, thought to be a type of Herring and a relic of the ice-age. The surrounding mountains -  Aran Benllyn, Arenig Fawr and the spectacular Berwyn mountains - provide an impressive backdrop and will appeal to walkers and climbers alike.

Of course, Bala also caters for the less gung-ho among us, with plenty of picnic spots and gentle walks alongside the lake.

There is even a little steam train which ambles from the nearby village of Llanuwchllyn and along the lake.

There is lots of history to explore and uncover - Bala was founded by Royal Charter as long ago as 1310 by Roger de Mortimer, who was charged with calming rebellious locals.

Traditionally the people of Bala were known for their knitting skills, and evidence of this is still found at the Monday markets.
